They were in Phenex's convertible, pulled far off the road with the roof drawn back, watching the stars. The night was crystal clear, and they'd already drawn out the constellations with their fingers, bringing them each to life. They'd taken to sitting in appreciative silence when Gibrielle smiled and poked her lover in the ribs, looking at him. "So, how have classes been going?" He grinned and looped an arm around her, pulling her against him.

"Getting tougher, but I think I'll manage." She grinned back.

"My little mad scientist." She teased, poking him again. He squirmed, laughing.

"Oh, hardly." He smiled at her.

"You'd better not blow anything up in our basement, you'll take the whole house dow-" She didn't get to finish as Phenex interrupted her, pointing towards the sky excitedly.

"Gibrielle, look!" And she looked. And what she saw was breathtaking. A meteor shower. So that's why he'd taken her out here, carefully guarding the news and anything else that might have clued her in on the special event.

"It's beautiful." She breathed after a few moments. Phenex, still grinning wildly, didn't reply, eyes never leaving the sky, so she smiled and leaned her head against his shoulder, watching the brilliant streaks of light paint the night.

Gibrielle smiled and leaned against the doorframe to the kitchen as Phenex shut the basement door behind him and started into the room. "Think I could borrow you for a few minutes?" She asked. Phenex looked at her, hesitating on his way into the kitchen. After a moment he finally smiled, something Gibrielle rarely saw anymore. They hardly ever spent time together these days. It was a rarity just to see him.

"Alright... just a little while." He smiled at her. She reached out and took him by the arm, ignoring the stains of god knows what on his lab coat, and lead him into the living room, pulling him down onto the couch with her. She lay there with her arms around him, forehead against his back, happy to just have that contact with him again. He sighed against her.

"You haven't been eating well." She said quietly.

"I'll have something in a bit. It's what I was headed for before you dragged me off, you know." He chided her jokingly. He sounded tired. Gibrielle clutched him closer. Tighter. Because there was more to this than just the desire to spend some time with him again.

"Phenex, I-" Her voice broke suddenly. "I need to tell you something... I'm pregnant." They'd discussed it before. She knew. She knew he wanted no part in having children. She felt him tense against her. Silence. He finally pulled away, sitting up on the couch before standing.

"That's alright." He said, finally looked at her as she sat up. "That's alright, you can have an abortion." Her expression grew pained but determined.

"No, Phenex. I'm not having an abortion." He stared at her a few moments and then he was across the living room in a few quick strides. Gibrielle jumped up after him but he'd already reached the basement door, slamming it shut violently behind him. She tried the handle, begging him to come back and talk to her, but it was locked, so she rested her back against the door and slid down it, resting her head against her knees and crying.

He was crouched behind a pile of boxes just behind the staircase and to the left. In the basement. Two days ago, he'd turned ten. There was no celebration of course... no acknowledgement whatsoever. But he was ten. And he figured he owed himself this, right? A kind of birthday gift to himself. Grey knew full well he didn't belong here... he'd never even been down here before. Off limits.

He'd been amazed as he descended the stairs. It was just as he'd imagined. No... better. A basement fully equipped for the kind of work he knew his father did. Shelves and desks stocked with lines of test tubes, all reflecting the colored lights of various machinery, papers, computers, surgical equipment... it was all here.

Presently he ducked further behind the boxes as the lights flickered on, footsteps slowly descending the stairs. His father came into view, and he watched as the man moved over to something in the corner. Something in a heap. Something that moved sluggishly when the man approached... and groaned. In the dark, he'd never even noticed the other man in the corner. He'd always known there were people of course. He'd never seen them but he'd always known... he'd heard the screams. The man was nude and bound and Grey watched as Phenex started to drag him by the rope binding his arms behind his back. There wasn't much struggle and Grey wondered briefly if he'd been sedated.

Phenex grunted as he worked to heft the other man onto the surgical table, strapping limbs into restraints to keep them still. Grey could see a stitched incision in the man's right thigh. His father rolled out some surgical tools on the nearby table and picked up a scalpel. Grey shifted, trying to get a closer look as his father made an incision in the man's upper left arm, drawing a whimper from him. That's when his foot nudged the boxes. He froze. Phenex straightened a bit, pausing in his cutting. It felt like an eternity. Had the whimper sufficiently covered the faint sound of shifting boxes? He only breathed again when Phenex went back to his work. Carefully now, he moved around the boxes. He was in plain view here, but Phenex would only see him if he turned around. Grey would just duck back behind the boxes if he looked like was going to turn around. Simple.

That's when Phenex turned around. Grey found himself stumbling back a few steps, vision blurring a moment before clearing, as Phenex stood there with an arm still outstretched in his direction, face a blank slate. He looked down, ever so slowly, at the scalpel protruding from his left shoulder. Then he was running flat out for the stairs, tearing the scalpel free with a pained whimper as he went and slamming the door shut behind him.

Phenex stared after him for a moment before calmly turning around, picking up another scalpel, and going back to work.

Can has mad scientist? by ~Darksong17 on deviantART

Yep. For the first time in years I actually picked up a pencil and didn't give up within a minute of trying to make something in my head appear on paper. Course... that resulted in a lot of eraser marks as well but hey I persisted this time and I'm happy with it.

Just a little fan art doodle, go to the deviantart page for more information on it :3

The basement door shut, perhaps a little harder than was meant. Phenex moved towards the kitchen, drifting on auto-pilot. He didn't even look down at the clumsy toddler he nearly knocked over as he passed through the doorway. Gibrielle sat at the kitchen table, watching a small TV on the counter. She looked up in surprise as he entered. It was a rare treat. She frowned deeply as her gaze fell on him. His eyes were sunken, dark circles painted beneath, and his skin was deathly pale. He was thin.

"Morning." He half-mumbled, not even looking at her. It was 10:00 PM. She watched as he took the pot of cold coffee from the machine and moved to pour it into a mug, jumping up to nudge his arm before he could pour the coffee onto the floor instead of in the mug. His eyes movements were sluggish and unfocused. She opened her mouth to speak but suddenly the man jerked.

There was a toddler tugging on his lab coat. Her breath hitched and she pulled the child away from him, gasping when she realized what he held. A scalpel. "Alastor!" She quickly pulled the sharp tool away from the child, checking him for injuries. Phenex watched this, motionless. He held the scalpel well. It was a thought and a kind of pride that was there and gone in an instant.

The child started to cry, having been torn from his newfound toy. Phenex swayed a bit and put down the coffee pot hard. "Shut him up." He hissed. But before Gibrielle could do anything he'd dropped the mug of cold coffee to shatter against the kitchen floor and grabbed the youngster by his shirt, pulling him forward harshly. The toddler screamed in fear and tried to pull away as Phenex leaned towards him, unsteady on his feet. "Fear, crying, things like that are for the lowest of the low." He snarled. "Stop crying!"

For a moment it looked like he was going to hit the child but Gibrielle shrieked. "Phenex, please!" She grabbed Alastor away and lifted the trembling boy into her arms. This wasn't the man she'd met years ago. This wasn't him. But she still held out hope. She still held out hope that he'd grow tired of the science, that he'd grow bored of it and come back to her the way he was. "I'll put him to bed." She uttered quickly, hurrying off with the child.

It was over fifteen minutes before she came back to find Phenex staring into space. She came up behind him and slipped her arms around him, pulling him to her. He went tense before finally relaxing against her with a sigh. Yet suddenly she was faced with the entirety of his weight as he slumped back against her. He'd passed out. Startled, she slipped to the floor with him, clutching his still form. She sat there, stunned, with him in her lap for a few moments before the gut wrenching sobs spilled over and took the world away.

Gibrielle opened the front door to her house and stood there for a moment, watching her son fix a magnifying glass on the ants marching along the sidewalk. "Alastor, can you come here for a moment?" She called. The boy looked up, frowning at the disturbance.

"Just a sec, mom." He went back to what he was doing. Then he remembered... he wasn't supposed to be burning ants, was he? Oops.

"Alastor, you need to come in here right now." He knew that tone. This was about more than just toasting ants on the sidewalk. Crap, what'd he do? He stood up immediately with that guilty look of a child who knows they are in trouble, but doesn't know for which offense quite yet, and followed his mother inside.

Gibrielle sat down on the couch, motioning him over. Suddenly, there was a small explosion from the basement. It made Gibrielle flinch, but Grey hardly seemed to notice. They were used to this by now. He looked at his mother expectantly and she lifted him into her lap. "Alastor... I found the cat." She said slowly. Grey's eyes widened. But how? He'd stitched it up so nicely, buried it all by himself in the backyard... He avoided her eyes.

Gibrielle shook him gently, urging him to look at her. "What did I tell you about doing that to animals? That was the neighbor's cat wasn't it?" Her son had always given her trouble, ever since he could walk. Maybe even before. Though the type of trouble was a bit... unique. From the time he'd set off a fireworks display to the time he'd attempted to strangle another kid on the playground. Then there was the animals.

It didn't make sense. Why could his father do these things but not him? Grey looked up suddenly, eyes bright. "Can I have my own pet?" He asked. Gibrielle frowned at him.

"Why do you want a pet?" She asked. His eagerness died quickly and he looked down again. "Alastor..." She leaned in and kissed him on the forehead. "You have your microscope, your anatomy books, and your chemistry set. Why don't you play with one of those?"

"Okay." He replied sullenly. Gibrielle snaked an arm around and tickled his ribs smiling as he giggled and squirmed in her lap. "Go on, get. I'll make some cookies." He hopped off of her lap and went off as told.

Gibrielle stood and headed for the kitchen, passing the basement door as she went. How long had it been now since she'd actually seen Phenex? All this talk about other scientists and building a research facility. A research facility that would experiment on... How long ago had it been that he first started bringing them home? How long ago was it that people first began disappearing in her basement? She'd stood by him all this time. Watched him change... and still clung to some hope. She reached for the cupboard with shaking hands. Maybe it was time to move on. Maybe it was time to take Alastor and leave.

Mar. 21st, 2008 @ 08:42 am Blurb: Goodnight Father.
He was all but silent as he entered the room, the door shutting quietly behind him. The room was divided into two halves, one larger than the other. The smaller half was behind a reinforced glass wall. He looked into that half. It was full of machinery, test tubes, and delicate equipment. There was also a man inside.

Grey drifted across the room without a sound, his hands hooked neatly behind his back. His father was far too absorbed in testing his biochemical weapon on the mouse in a small glass box to even notice him. He reached the temperature controls for the half-room, face expressionless as he reached out and cranked them up. Still Phenex didn't notice him. No, the man was watching the mouse writhe and squeak, jotting things down on a clipboard with a certain satisfaction at the results.

Grey crossed the room again, humming lightly under his breath. This time he moved to the reinforced glass door to the half-room. Beside it was a red emergency button. He'd already disabled the alarm earlier. Of course. He clucked his tongue a bit and reached out, pressing it. Immediately there was the sound of metal bolts thunking home inside the door, as well as the hiss of an extra vacuum seal.

This got Phenex's attention. The man jolted and looked up, eyes narrowing when he spotted Grey. "...What are you... doing?" The realization on his face was wonderful. He could feel the temperature rising now. Something glass in the room shattered and Phenex flinched, losing that ever present calm, coldness about him as his eyes widened. It was very satisfying.

The man flew to the window as more glass shattered in the room, a pea green fog of gas rising from the broken shards. He pressed a hand against the glass and Grey moved closer, smiling. "Don't do this! Please... Alastor, d-don't do this. You can have whatever you want. Anything!" His voice was frantic but muffled by the glass.

Grey drew back as if the man had hit him, his expression nothing short of stunned. After all these years? ...After all this time? Haha... hahaha. The nerve. He smiled slowly. "...It's a little late for that, don't you think, Phenex...?" The man looked like he was about to say something but his eyes grew wider and he drew back away from the window, coughing and hacking. It wasn't long before he was coughing up blood. It wasn't long before that blood was chunky and coagulated. It wasn't long before his flesh was swelling, cells saturating. His skin took on a sick, greenish hue, and he screamed, collapsing to the floor and writhing in agony.

Grey moved forward and pressed a hand neatly to the exact place his father's had been only moments before. He watched with a quiet smile as his father's skin blackened and split open, as the man decomposed alive. He watched until there was no longer any movement, no longer any strangled screams, Phenex's eyes staring straight ahead and bulging from their sockets.

Finally, he drew his hand away from the window, turning and leaving. The B wing was finally his. He shut the door quietly behind him. Click.

1) Make a list of 10 characters.
2) Assign each character a number.
3) Without telling anyone who's on the list or the character's assigned number, get questions from your flist about what they'd like to know about them. (IE: "If 3 and 4 were trapped in a cave together with only a blanket and a toothpick, what would they do?" (The more random the better!)
4) Post the answers and who was who on the list.

Grey would be found sitting huddled at the bottom of the basement stairs, clutching his broken hand. The only reason Phenex knew anything was off was because the door to the basement was open. Grey never left the door open. The basement was his domain now.

The man made his way down the stairs, coming to a halt and staring down at the child with a cold look of disgust. "What happened?" It took a moment before Grey would even look up at him, and even then he averted his eyes.

"S-someone broke i-in." He muttered through his pain. Phenex stared at him a few moments longer before reaching out and grabbing the boy by his shirt to drag him up, the faintest hint of anger in his face. Grey gritted his teeth. No tears, no tears, oh god, no tears.

"There were no signs of forced entry. You left the door unlocked didn't you? It's your own fault." He released the boy to fall back against the floor with a gasp. Phenex began to make his way back up the stairs.

"Get up, we're going to the hospital. You closed your hand in the car door." He said with the same calm, coldness he always had about him. Grey got up slowly and followed.

The smell of rain was still in the air as a man in a suit hurriedly made his way down the wet pavement of the sidewalk, clutching a briefcase to himself. Only half. He'd only come up with and delivered half of the money so far. He ducked into an alleyway, making quickly for the car parked out of sight on the other side.

In his hurry, he failed to see a pothole in the ground and stepped right into the ankle deep water it'd collected. At the same time, his briefcase flew open and he cursed, kicking his soaked foot in the air a few times to shake off excess water. Luckily the briefcase was now quite empty. He closed it again and continued. Almost there. He was right at the end of the alleyway. Right there. Right there when someone detached themselves from the shadows.

He hardly had time to blink before he was shoved against a wall, staring into the eyes... of a woman. A woman in a pinstripe pantsuit with a red tie and matching fedora hat, short blonde hair (one side shorter than the other) neatly in place under it. She had a gun pressed under his chin. "This just ain't your day is it baby?"

The gunshot echoed.

Jun. 13th, 2007 @ 11:39 am Blurb: Darwin at work. (I scare myself sometimes.)
There was an unmanned stroller barrelling down the hill at the park. An oddly dressed woman yelling "Save my baby!" And at least ten people moving to do just that. Problem was, in that stroller was just a bundle of blankets.

The "woman" threw aside the robes "she" was wrapped in. And the obviously insane man opened fire with an automatic on all who darted into the path to save "his child".

Luckily, I had been one of the few people sitting unmoving on a bench, watching the stroller pass, with the simple thought of "Darwin at work."
